A horizontal gas engine running at 210 rpm has a bore of 220 mm and a ...
Solution:

Given parameters:

- Engine speed (N) = 210 rpm
- Bore (d) = 220 mm
- Stroke (L) = 440 mm
- Connecting rod length (R) = 924 mm
- Reciprocating parts weight (W) = 20 kg
- Gas pressure on the cover side (P1) = 500 kN/m^2
- Gas pressure on the crank side (P2) = 60 kN/m^2
- Diameter of piston rod (d1) = 40 mm
- Crank angle (theta) = 30 degrees

Calculations:

1. Piston area (A)

A = (pi/4) * d^2
= (3.14/4) * (0.22)^2
= 0.038 m^2

2. Force on the piston (F)

F = P1 * A
= 500 * 10^3 * 0.038
= 19,000 N

3. Radial force on the connecting rod (Fr)

Fr = F * cos(theta)
= 19,000 * cos(30)
= 16,456.6 N

4. Tangential force on the connecting rod (Ft)

Ft = F * sin(theta)
= 19,000 * sin(30)
= 9,500 N

5. Weight of reciprocating parts (W)

W = 20 kg * 9.81
= 196.2 N

6. Total force on the piston (Ft)

Ft1 = Ft - W
= 9,500 - 196.2
= 9,303.8 N

7. Acceleration of the piston (a)

a = Ft1 / m
= 9,303.8 / (m1 + m2)
= 9,303.8 / (20 + 0.7854)
= 462.9 m/s^2

8. Inertia force on the piston (Fi)

Fi = m * a
= 20 * 462.9
= 9,258 N

9. Turning moment on the crankshaft (T)

T = (Fr * R) - (Fi * d1/2)
= (16,456.6 * 0.924) - (9,258 * 0.02/2)
= 14,926.9 Nm

Therefore, the turning moment on the crankshaft is 14,926.9 Nm.
