Problem: Salesman A is allowed to 5% commission on sale made by him plus a bonus of 2% on the sales over 12000, salesman B is allowed 4% commission on the sale made by him plus a bonus of 3% on the sales over 8000. If the commission of both salesman is 25% of total sale, find out the total sales?
Solution:
Let the sales made by salesman A and B be 'x' and 'y' respectively.
Commission earned by salesman A = 5% of x
Bonus earned by salesman A = 2% of (x - 12000) [if x > 12000]
Commission earned by salesman B = 4% of y
Bonus earned by salesman B = 3% of (y - 8000) [if y > 8000]
Total commission earned by both salesman = 25% of (x + y)
Therefore, we can write the equation as:
0.05x + 0.02(x - 12000) + 0.04y + 0.03(y - 8000) = 0.25(x + y)
Simplifying the above equation:
0.07x + 0.07y - 200 = 0.25x + 0.28y
0.18x = 0.21y + 200
x = (0.21/0.18)y + (200/0.18)
Let's assume that the sales made by salesman A and B are equal i.e. x = y
Then, substituting the value of x in the above equation:
x = (0.21/0.18)x + (200/0.18)
0.03x = 1111.11
x = 37037.04
Therefore, the total sales made by both salesman is:
Total Sales = 2x [as the sales made by both salesman are equal]
Total Sales = 2 × 37037.04
Total Sales = 74074.08
Hence, the total sales made by both salesman is 74074.08.

Bonus earned by salesman A = 2% of (x - 12000) [if x > 12000]

Bonus earned by salesman B = 3% of (y - 8000) [if y > 8000]
Total commission earned by both salesman = 25% of (x + y)
Therefore, we can write the equation as:
0.05x + 0.02(x - 12000) + 0.04y + 0.03(y - 8000) = 0.25(x + y)
Simplifying the above equation:
0.07x + 0.07y - 200 = 0.25x + 0.28y
0.18x = 0.21y + 200
x = (0.21/0.18)y + (200/0.18)
Let's assume that the sales made by salesman A and B are equal i.e. x = y
Then, substituting the value of x in the above equation:
x = (0.21/0.18)x + (200/0.18)
0.03x = 1111.11
x = 37037.04
Therefore, the total sales made by both salesman is:
Total Sales = 2x [as the sales made by both salesman are equal]
Total Sales = 2 × 37037.04
Total Sales = 74074.08
Hence, the total sales made by both salesman is 74074.08.
