Difference between reflection and refraction?
Reflection vs Refraction

Reflection:

  • Definition: Reflection is the phenomenon of bouncing back of light waves from a surface after striking it.

  • Explanation: When a light wave hits a surface, it bounces back in the same direction. The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection. The reflected light waves produce a mirror image of the object. Reflection is responsible for the formation of images in mirrors and other reflective surfaces.

  • Example: When we look at ourselves in a mirror, we see a reflection of ourselves.

Refraction:

  • Definition: Refraction is the phenomenon of bending of light waves when they pass through a medium of different refractive index.

  • Explanation: When light waves pass through a medium of different refractive index, they change their direction. The amount of bending depends on the angle of incidence and the refractive indices of the two media. Refraction is responsible for many optical illusions, such as the apparent bending of a straight stick in water.

  • Example: The bending of light when it passes from air to water is an example of refraction.

Differences:

  • Definition: Reflection is the bouncing back of light waves from a surface after striking it, while refraction is the bending of light waves when they pass through a medium of different refractive index.

  • Cause: Reflection occurs due to the interaction of light waves with a surface, while refraction occurs due to the change in the speed of light as it passes through a medium of different refractive index.

  • Angle: The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection in reflection, while the amount of bending depends on the angle of incidence and the refractive indices of the two media in refraction.

  • Example: An example of reflection is the formation of images in mirrors, while an example of refraction is the bending of light when it passes from air to water.
