Science Class 10 FAQs
1. What is the importance of mitosis? |
Ans. Mitosis is important for the growth and repair of cells in multicellular organisms. It allows cells to divide and produce identical daughter cells, ensuring that the genetic material is evenly distributed between them. This process is crucial for the formation of tissues and organs, as well as for the replacement of damaged or dead cells. Mitosis also plays a role in asexual reproduction, where an individual can reproduce by producing clones of itself.
2. What are the stages of mitosis? |
Ans. Mitosis consists of four main stages: prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. During prophase, the chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes, the nuclear envelope breaks down, and spindle fibers form. In metaphase, the chromosomes line up at the equator of the cell and attach to spindle fibers. During anaphase, the sister chromatids separate and are pulled apart to opposite poles of the cell by the spindle fibers. Finally, during telophase, the nuclear envelope reforms around each set of chromosomes, the spindle fibers break down, and the cell undergoes cytokinesis, dividing into two daughter cells.
3. How is mitosis different from meiosis? |
Ans. Mitosis and meiosis are both processes of cell division, but they differ in their outcomes and the way they distribute genetic material. Mitosis produces two identical daughter cells that have the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell, while meiosis produces four genetically diverse daughter cells that have half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell. Meiosis also involves two rounds of cell division, resulting in the separation of homologous chromosomes during meiosis I and sister chromatids during meiosis II. Mitosis, on the other hand, involves only one round of cell division and the separation of sister chromatids.
4. What happens if mitosis goes wrong? |
Ans. If mitosis goes wrong, it can result in genetic abnormalities that can lead to diseases such as cancer. Errors can occur during any of the four stages of mitosis, such as chromosomal instability, defects in spindle formation, or failure of cytokinesis. These errors can lead to the formation of cells with abnormal numbers of chromosomes or incomplete sets of chromosomes, which can cause cell death or uncontrolled cell growth. In some cases, these abnormal cells can develop into tumors and invade nearby tissues.
5. How can mitosis be regulated? |
Ans. Mitosis is regulated by a complex network of proteins and checkpoints that ensure that the process is carried out correctly. These checkpoints monitor the cell for DNA damage, ensure that the chromosomes are aligned properly, and check that the spindle fibers are attached correctly to the chromosomes. If any errors are detected, the cell cycle can be paused or halted to allow for repair or apoptosis (programmed cell death). Additionally, mitosis is regulated by a number of signaling pathways that respond to internal and external cues, such as growth factors or stress signals, to ensure that cell division occurs at the appropriate time and in the appropriate context.
