Lord Dalhousie, who came to india as a governer-general in 1848 used the doctarine of lapse as a means of extending the empire. In india, every hindu had a right to adopt a male child as his heir. This was sanctioned by both the religion and the society. However, when Lord Dalhousie came to India he decided that the rulers of the independant states has to seek permission of the British to adopt an heir to the throne. Thus, the British acquired the right to sanction or refuse such adoption by a dependant Indian ruler.
