Various factors  which led to subsistence crisis are the following: 1.the shortage of food was there  due to an increase in the population of the country especially the bread which was the staple diet of the people there resulted in food riots and subsistence crisis. the bakers were exploited and they hoarded supplies of bread.Population of the country rose from 23 million in 1715 to 28 million in 1789. The wages which were fixed by the employer were not given to the labourers.as the wages did not keep pace with rising prices of the essential commodities. This widened the bridge between the rich and poor. Things became even more worse when drought ,hail , frost floods and low rainfall reduced the harvest of the crops.Thus,these all led to subsistence crisis which refers to an extreme situation that endangered the means of livelihood which had occurred quite a many time in Old Regime since 1789.
