 A particle is resting on a smooth horizontal floor. At t = 0, a horizontal force starts acting on it. Magnitude of the force increases with time according to law F = a.t, where a is a constant. For the figure shown which of the following statements is/are  correct ?

  • a)
     Curve 1 shows acceleration against time
  • b)
    Curve 2 shows velocity against time
  • c)
    Curve 2 shows velocity against acceleration
  • d)
    None of these
Correct answer is option 'A,B,C'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
A particle is resting on a smooth horizontal floor. At t = 0, a horizo...
a=F/m=αt/m……(i)
or a ∝ t
i.e. a-t graph is a straight line passing through
origin.
If u=0, then integration of Eq. (i) gives,
v=αt2/2m or v∝t2
Hence in this situation (when u=0) v-t graph is a
parabola passing through origin.

A particle is resting on a smooth horizontal floor. At t = 0, a horizo...
F=a.t

A) so acceleration a`=at/m
so it varies linearly

B) a`=dv/dt
therefore dv/dt=at/m
integrate it u get v=at^2/2m(constant of integration is 0 bcz initially particle at rest )
so it varies according to quadratic equation

C) as a`=at/m so t=ma`/a
hence v=m(a`)^2/2a
so it varies according to quadratic equation.
So A B C is the answer.
