Merits of Green Revolution
- Increased Agricultural Productivity: Green revolution led to increased productivity of crops due to the use of high-yielding varieties and modern agricultural technologies. This helped in meeting the food requirements of the growing population.
- Improved Livelihoods: Green revolution helped in improving the livelihoods of farmers as they were able to produce more crops and earn higher incomes. This led to the reduction of poverty in rural areas.
- Reduced Dependence on Imports: Green revolution reduced the dependence of countries on food imports. Countries like India, which were once dependent on food imports, became self-sufficient in food production.
Demerits of Green Revolution
- Environmental Degradation: The use of modern agricultural technologies led to environmental degradation. Excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers led to soil and water pollution.
- Increased Inequality: Green revolution led to increased inequality between large and small farmers. Large farmers were able to afford expensive agricultural inputs and technology, while small farmers were left behind.
