Tides are caused by gravitational pull of large celestial bodies.I will try to cover most of the things related with tides in simple points below -Not only sun and moon, other celestial bodies do have gravitational pull or influence tide formation, but since they are situated at a very large distance from our earth, their pull is not of much significance.A full moon has more tendency to pull more water thereby causing higher tides than a new moon.Bigger the area, bigger the pulling effect. That means, lakes and rivers do experience gravitational pull but since their area or mass of water is not much in comparison to large oceans and seas, not much significant pull is expeienced in lakes and rivers.
