Absorption: The third step is the uptake of nutrients from the digested food into the bloodstream. Nutrients are absorbed through the walls of the digestive tract and transported to the cells of the body.

Assimilation: The fourth step is the utilization of absorbed nutrients by the cells for energy, growth, and repair. Nutrients are used to produce ATP, the energy currency of the cell, and to build new cells and tissues.

Egestion: The final step is the elimination of undigested and waste materials from the body. Animals excrete waste products through the anus, cloaca, or specialized excretory organs such as kidneys.
