Australia is a country that is located in the southern hemisphere. It is the world's sixth-largest country by area and the world's smallest continent. The capital of Australia is Canberra, a planned city that was built specifically to be the capital.
Location
Canberra is located in the southeast of Australia, in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). It is approximately 280 kilometers southwest of Sydney and 660 kilometers northeast of Melbourne.
History
Before Canberra became the capital of Australia, Melbourne was the temporary capital. However, as Sydney and Melbourne were both vying for the title of capital, it was decided that a new capital city would be built. Canberra was chosen as the site for the capital in 1908, and construction began in 1913.
Design and Layout
Canberra was designed by American architect Walter Burley Griffin. The city was planned to be a garden city, with plenty of green spaces and parks. The city is also home to many important government buildings, including Parliament House, the High Court of Australia, and the Australian War Memorial.
Population
As of 2021, the population of Canberra is approximately 430,000 people. The city is home to many government workers, as well as students and researchers from the Australian National University and the University of Canberra.

Canberra is known for its cultural attractions, including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Museum of Australia, and the National Library of Australia. The city is also home to many festivals and events throughout the year, including the Canberra Balloon Spectacular, the Canberra Comedy Festival, and the Floriade flower festival.
