Activity:

Take 1 ml of pure ethanol in a test tube and add 1ml of ethanoic acid to it. Then add 2 to 3 drops of concentrated sulphuric acid to the mixture.

Warm the test tube

Pour the contents of the test tube in a 50ml of water taken in another beaker and smell it.

A sweet smell is obtained with indicates the formation of ester.

Alcohol + Carboxylic acid ⇌ Ester + Water

Mechanism of Esterification Reaction

The esterification reaction takes place in two steps:

The alcohol is protonated by the acid catalyst to form an oxonium ion.

The oxonium ion reacts with the carboxylic acid to form an ester and water.

The reaction is reversible, so the ester can be hydrolysed back into the alcohol and carboxylic acid under acidic or basic conditions.

Applications of Esterification Reaction

Esterification reaction is widely used in industry and everyday life for various purposes such as:

Production of fragrances and flavours.

Manufacture of plastics such as polyesters.

Preparation of biodiesel.

Production of pharmaceuticals.

Manufacturing of solvents.
