A casting of size 100cm x 100cm x 25cm was filled by top and bottom g...
Solution:

Given parameters are:

Area of gate = 5 cm²

Height of casting = 25 cm

Size of casting = 100 cm × 100 cm × 25 cm

Let the time taken to fill the casting by top gate be t₁ and by bottom gate be t₂.

We know that the volume of the casting is given by:

Volume of casting = Area of base × Height of casting

= 100 cm × 100 cm × 25 cm

= 2,50,000 cm³

The volume of the gate is given by:

Volume of gate = Area of gate × Height of casting

= 5 cm² × 25 cm

= 125 cm³

The volume of the pouring basin is neglected as it is very small compared to the volume of the casting.

The formula for the time taken to fill the casting is given by:

t = (Volume of casting - Volume of gate) / Discharge rate

Discharge rate is the rate at which the molten metal flows through the gate.

For the top gate, the manometric height is given as 25 cm. The formula for the discharge rate through the top gate is given by:

Discharge rate through top gate = √(2gh) × Area of gate

where g is the acceleration due to gravity and h is the manometric height.

Substituting the given values, we get:

Discharge rate through top gate = √(2 × 9.81 × 25) × 5

= 221.77 cm³/s

For the bottom gate, the formula for the discharge rate is given by:

Discharge rate through bottom gate = √(2gh) × Area of gate

where h is the height of the metal column above the gate.

Since the gate is at the bottom of the casting, the height of the metal column above the gate is equal to the height of the casting, which is 25 cm.

Substituting the given values, we get:

Discharge rate through bottom gate = √(2 × 9.81 × 25) × 5

= 221.77 cm³/s

Therefore, the time taken to fill the casting by top gate is:

t₁ = (2,50,000 - 125) / 221.77

= 1121.6 s

The time taken to fill the casting by bottom gate is:

t₂ = (2,50,000 - 125) / 221.77

= 1121.6 s

The difference in time to fill the casting by top and bottom gates is:

t₂ - t₁ = 0 s (No difference)

Therefore, the correct answer is (a) -230.
