Calculation of Power Transmitting Capacity of Multi-Disk Clutch

Given data:

Number of steel plates = 5
Number of bronze plates = 4
Inner diameter of friction disks = 75 mm
Outer diameter of friction disks = 150 mm
Coefficient of friction = 0.1
Intensity of pressure on friction lining = 0.3 N/mm2
Rotational speed = 750 rpm

Formula used:

Power transmitting capacity = (2πNT)/60 × (1/1000) × (T1 - T2)

where,
N = rotational speed in rpm
T1 = torque transmitted by the driving shaft
T2 = torque transmitted by the driven shaft

Calculation:

1. Calculation of torque transmitted by the driving shaft (T1)

T1 = (π/2) × (D1^2 - d1^2) × P × μ

where,
D1 = outer diameter of the steel plate = 150 mm
d1 = inner diameter of the steel plate = 75 mm
P = intensity of pressure on friction lining = 0.3 N/mm2
μ = coefficient of friction = 0.1

T1 = (π/2) × (150^2 - 75^2) × 0.3 × 0.1
T1 = 172.6875 Nm

2. Calculation of torque transmitted by the driven shaft (T2)

T2 = (π/2) × (D2^2 - d2^2) × P × μ

where,
D2 = outer diameter of the bronze plate = 150 mm
d2 = inner diameter of the bronze plate = 75 mm
P = intensity of pressure on friction lining = 0.3 N/mm2
μ = coefficient of friction = 0.1

T2 = (π/2) × (150^2 - 75^2) × 0.3 × 0.1
T2 = 172.6875 Nm

3. Calculation of power transmitting capacity

Power transmitting capacity = (2πNT)/60 × (1/1000) × (T1 - T2)

N = 750 rpm

Power transmitting capacity = (2π × 750 × T)/60 × (1/1000) × (172.6875 - 172.6875)
Power transmitting capacity = 9.2 kW (approx)

Therefore, the power transmitting capacity of the multi-disk clutch is 9.2 kW (approx).
