Roman Emperor Tiberius: Second in Line

Tiberius was the second in the long line of Roman emperors. He succeeded Augustus, his stepfather, and ruled the Roman Empire from 14 AD to 37 AD. Tiberius was known for his military conquests and his strictness as a ruler.

Early Life

Tiberius was born on November 16, 42 BC, in Rome. His mother was Livia Drusilla, who later became the wife of Augustus. Tiberius was a capable soldier even from a young age and served in several military campaigns during his youth.

Rise to Power

In 12 BC, Tiberius married Augustus' daughter, Julia. However, the marriage was not a happy one, and Tiberius chose to leave Rome and retire to Rhodes. It was only after the death of Augustus' designated heir, Gaius, that Tiberius was forced to return to Rome and take on the role of emperor.

Reign as Emperor

Tiberius' reign as emperor was marked by his military conquests. He successfully conquered several regions, including Pannonia, Dalmatia, and Illyricum. Tiberius was also known for his strict rule and his ability to maintain law and order in the empire.

However, his reign was not without controversy. Tiberius was accused of being involved in several scandals, including the murder of his own son, Drusus. These accusations tarnished his reputation and led to growing discontent among the people of Rome.

Death and Legacy

Tiberius died on March 16, 37 AD, on the island of Capri. He was succeeded by his grand-nephew, Caligula. Tiberius' reign as emperor was marked by his military successes, but also by controversy and scandal. He remains an important figure in Roman history and his legacy continues to be studied and debated by historians today.
