Triangle Law of Addition

The Triangle Law of Addition is a mathematical principle that is used to add two vectors together. This law states that if two vectors are represented by two sides of a triangle, then the third side of the triangle represents the sum of these two vectors. In other words, the vector sum of two or more vectors can be obtained by placing them head to tail and joining the tail of the first vector to the head of the second vector and so on till the last vector.

Geometry of Triangle Law of Addition

When two vectors are added together using the Triangle Law of Addition, the resulting vector is the diagonal of a parallelogram formed by the two original vectors. This can be seen from the geometry of the triangle law of addition. If we have two vectors A and B, we can draw them as two sides of a triangle. The third side of the triangle represents the sum of these two vectors, which we can call vector C. Now, if we take A and B and move them so that the tail of vector B is touching the head of vector A, we get a parallelogram. The diagonal of this parallelogram is vector C, which represents the sum of vectors A and B.

Mathematical Representation

The Triangle Law of Addition can be expressed mathematically using vectors. If we have two vectors A and B, we can represent them using their components in the x, y, and z directions as follows:

A = Ax i + Ay j + Az k
B = Bx i + By j + Bz k

The vector sum of A and B, which we can call C, can be obtained by adding the corresponding components of A and B:

C = A + B = (Ax + Bx) i + (Ay + By) j + (Az + Bz) k.
