Solution:

pH of mixture of H2SO4 and NH4OH solution

Step 1: Write the balanced chemical equation for the reaction between H2SO4 and NH4OH.

H2SO4 + 2NH4OH → (NH4)2SO4 + 2H2O

Step 2: Calculate the moles of H2SO4 and NH4OH in the given volumes.

n(H2SO4) = M × V = 0.1 × 20/1000 = 0.002 mol
n(NH4OH) = M × V = 0.2 × 30/1000 = 0.006 mol

Step 3: Determine the limiting reactant. NH4OH is the limiting reactant as it is present in lesser amount.

Step 4: Calculate the amount of NH4OH that reacts with H2SO4.

n(NH4OH) reacted = n(H2SO4)/2 = 0.002/2 = 0.001 mol

Step 5: Calculate the moles of NH4+ and OH- ions produced by the reaction.

n(NH4+) = n(NH4OH) - n(NH4OH) reacted = 0.006 - 0.001 = 0.005 mol
n(OH-) = 2 × n(NH4OH) reacted = 2 × 0.001 = 0.002 mol

Step 6: Calculate the concentration of NH4+ and OH- ions in the final solution.

[ NH4+ ] = n(NH4+) / Vtotal = 0.005 / (20 + 30)/1000 = 0.0833 M
[ OH- ] = n(OH-) / Vtotal = 0.002 / (20 + 30)/1000 = 0.0333 M

Step 7: Calculate the pOH of the solution.

pOH = -log[ OH- ] = -log(0.0333) = 1.48

Step 8: Calculate the pH of the solution.

pH = 14 - pOH = 14 - 1.48 = 12.52

pH of ammonium acetate solution by buffer mixture method

Step 1: Write the balanced chemical equation for the reaction between NH4OH and CH3COOH.

NH4OH + CH3COOH → NH4CH3COO + H2O

Step 2: Calculate the moles of NH4OH and CH3COOH in the given volumes.

n(NH4OH) = M × V = 0.2 × 100/1000 = 0.02 mol
n(CH3COOH) = M × V = 0.1 × 100/1000 = 0.01 mol

Step 3: Determine the limiting reactant. CH3COOH is the limiting reactant as it is present in lesser amount.

Step 4: Calculate the amount of CH3COOH that reacts with NH4OH.

n(CH3COOH) reacted = n(NH4OH) = 0.02 mol

Step 5: Calculate the amount of NH4+ and CH3COO- ions produced by the reaction.

n(NH4+) = n(NH4OH) - n
