Semiconductor materials like Si and Ge are usually purified by zone refining. Zone refining is based on the principle of fractional crystallisation i.e. difference in solubilities of impurities in solid and molten states of metal, so that the zones of impurities are formed and finally removed.

Zone refining:
Zone refining is a commonly used method for purifying semiconductor materials like silicon (Si) and germanium (Ge). It involves the process of passing a molten zone through a solid material to remove impurities and obtain a highly pure material.

Working Principle:
The process of zone refining can be explained in the following steps:

1. A rod or crystal of the semiconductor material, such as Si or Ge, is taken as the starting material.

2. The starting material is placed in a specially designed furnace with a heating element. The furnace is divided into several zones, typically three.

3. The furnace is heated in such a way that the middle zone is kept at a higher temperature than the surrounding zones. This creates a temperature gradient across the rod or crystal.

4. As the temperature gradient is established, the impurities present in the starting material tend to become more concentrated towards the cooler end of the rod or crystal.

5. A small molten zone is created by moving the rod or crystal slowly through the furnace, with the molten zone positioned at the interface between the hotter and cooler zones.

6. As the molten zone moves through the solid material, it selectively dissolves impurities present in the crystal lattice.

7. The molten zone is then moved to the cooler end of the rod or crystal, and as it solidifies, the impurities are left behind in the molten region.

8. This process is repeated multiple times, with the molten zone being moved back and forth through the solid material. Each pass through the solid material results in a higher purity of the semiconductor material.

9. The final product obtained after several passes through the solid material is a highly purified semiconductor material with a significantly reduced impurity concentration.

Advantages of Zone Refining:
- The zone refining method allows for the purification of semiconductor materials to a high degree of purity, often exceeding 99.9999%.

- It is a relatively simple and cost-effective method compared to other purification techniques.

- Zone refining can be easily scaled up for mass production of purified semiconductor materials.

- It is a versatile technique and can be used for purifying a wide range of semiconductor materials.

Conclusion:
Zone refining is a widely used method for the purification of semiconductor materials like silicon (Si) and germanium (Ge). It involves the controlled movement of a molten zone through a solid material, selectively dissolving and removing impurities. The process is repeated multiple times to obtain a highly purified semiconductor material with a high degree of purity.
