Dead-end System
It is also called as a tree system, it consists of one main supply line, from which originates (generally at right angles) a number of sub main pipes. Each sub main is then divided into several branch pipes, called laterals. This type of distribution system is suitable for older towns which have developed in a haphazard manner, without properly planned road e.g. old city, irregularly grown city, etc.
It is easier to construct as no designing or planning is required. The pressure at the ends becomes undesirably low and it is difficult to maintain chlorine levels at the ends.

Consider the following statements:In the water-supply distribution ne...
Explanation:

The dead-end system is not favored in the water-supply distribution network due to the following reasons:

Low Pressure at Dead-Ends:
- When additional extensions are made to the network, the pressure at the dead-ends becomes undesirably low.
- This is because water cannot flow beyond the dead-end, leading to a decrease in pressure.

Difficulty in Maintaining Residual Chlorine Levels:
- It is difficult to maintain residual chlorine levels at the dead-ends.
- This is because chlorine dissipates over time, and it is difficult to ensure that the required levels are maintained at the dead-ends.

Deprivation of Water During Repairs:
- During repairs, service connections beyond the point of repair are deprived of water.
- This is because the dead-end system typically has only one connection point, and shutting it off for repairs affects all downstream connections.

Cumbersome Design:
- The dead-end system is cumbersome in terms of design as it requires more pipes and fittings to be installed.
- This leads to higher costs and more maintenance requirements.

Conclusion:
- Based on the above reasons, the dead-end system is not favored in water-supply distribution networks.
- Other systems, such as looped systems, are preferred as they provide better pressure and flow control, easier maintenance, and more efficient use of resources.
