The pressure at the centre of a pipe of a diameter 3 m is 29.43 N/cm2. The pipe contains oil of specific gravity 0.87 and is closed with a gate valve. Find the force exerted by the oil on the gate and position of centre of pressure?
Most Upvoted Answer
The pressure at the centre of a pipe of a diameter 3 m is 29.43 N/cm2....
Given:

  • Diameter of pipe = 3 m

  • Pressure at the centre of pipe = 29.43 N/cm2

  • Specific gravity of oil = 0.87

Force exerted by oil on the gate:

  • Assuming the gate valve is closed, the oil in the pipe is in hydrostatic equilibrium

  • Therefore, the pressure at any point in the oil column is directly proportional to its depth from the surface

  • The force exerted by the oil on the gate can be calculated as:

    • F = ρghA

    • Where ρ is the density of the oil, g is the acceleration due to gravity, h is the depth of the oil column above the gate and A is the area of the gate

    • Using the specific gravity of oil, ρ = 0.87 x ρwater

    • Assuming the pipe is vertical, h = 1.5 m (half of the pipe diameter)

    • Area of the gate = πr^2, where r = 1.5 m (radius of pipe)

    • Therefore, F = 0.87 x 9.81 x 1.5 x π x (1.5)^2 = 188.95 kN

Position of centre of pressure:

  • The centre of pressure is the point at which the resultant force on the gate acts

  • Assuming the gate valve is flat and horizontal, the centre of pressure is located at a distance of h/2 from the bottom of the gate

  • Where h is the depth of the oil column above the gate

  • Therefore, the centre of pressure is located at a distance of 0.75 m from the bottom of the gate
