In some code, letters a, b, c, d and e represent numbers 2, 4, 5, 6 and 10. We just do not know which letter represents which number. Consider the following relationships:
I. a + c = e,
II. b – d = d and
III. e + a = b
Which of the following options are true?
  • a)
    b = 4, d = 2
  • b)
    a = 4, e = 6
  • c)
    b = 6, e = 2
  • d)
    a = 4, c = 6
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?

We have a + c = e so possible summation 6+4=10 or 4+2 = 6.
Also b = 2d so possible values  4 = 2 * 2 or 10 = 5 * 2.
So considering both we have b = 10 , d = 5, a= 4 ,c = 2, e = 6.
Hence the correct option is B .

We cannot complete the statement as the relationship between b and d is not given. Without knowing the value of b or d, we cannot determine any relationship between them or any other variables.

C=d,
III.a+d=b,
IV.c+b=15.

Using these relationships, we can solve for the values of each letter:

From I, we know that c=e.

From II, we know that b=c=d.

Substituting these values into III, we get: a+d=b becomes a+d=c, since b=c=d.

Substituting these values into IV, we get: c+b=15 becomes e+3b=15, since c=e and b=c=d.

Simplifying this equation, we get: 3b=15-e.

Substituting this value for b into the equation from III, we get: a+d=c becomes a+d=e.

Substituting these values into the equation from III, we get: a+d=3b/2, since e=3b/2.

Substituting the value for 3b/2 from the equation above, we get: a+d=(15-e)/2.

Now we have two equations for a+d: a+d=e and a+d=(15-e)/2.

Setting these two equations equal to each other, we get:

e=(15-e)/2

Multiplying both sides by 2, we get:

2e=15-e

Adding e to both sides, we get:

3e=15

Dividing both sides by 3, we get:

e=5

Now we can use this value to solve for the other letters:

From I, we know that c=e=5.

From II, we know that b=c=d=5.

From III, we know that a+d=c, so a+d=5.

From IV, we know that c+b=15, so 5+5=15, which is true.

Therefore, the solution is:

a=10, b=5, c=5, d=5, e=5.
