Solution:
Let us assume that the shopkeeper mixes x kg of the first variety and y kg of the second variety.
Given that the cost of the first variety rice is Rs.35/kg and the cost of the second variety rice is Rs.28/kg.
So, the cost of x kg of the first variety rice = 35x
And, the cost of y kg of the second variety rice = 28y
The total cost of the mixture = 35x + 28y
The selling price of the mixture = Rs.36/kg
Given that the shopkeeper gains 20% profit.
So, the cost price of the mixture = (100/120) x Selling price of the mixture
= (5/6) x 36
= Rs.30/kg
Therefore, the cost of the mixture of x kg of the first variety rice and y kg of the second variety rice is Rs.30(x+y) and it can be written as:
35x + 28y = 30(x+y)
On solving the above equation, we get:
5x = 2y
Therefore, the ratio in which the two varieties are mixed is:
x:y = 2:5
Hence, the correct option is (a) 2:5.
