To measure the effective diameter of an external metric thread (included angle is 60°) of 3.5 mm pitch, a cylindrical standard of 30.5 mm diameter and two wires of 2 mm diameter each are used. The micrometer reading over the standard and over the wires are 16.532 mm and 15.398 mm respectively. The effective diameter (in mm) of the thread is

°), follow these steps:

1. Use a caliper to measure the major diameter of the thread (the widest point across the crests of the thread).

2. Subtract the pitch (distance between adjacent threads) from the major diameter to get the minor diameter (the narrowest point across the roots of the thread).

3. Add the pitch to the major diameter to get the effective diameter (the average diameter across the tops of the threads).

4. Alternatively, you can use the following formula to calculate the effective diameter:

Effective diameter = major diameter - 0.6495 x pitch

Example: Let's say you have an external metric thread with a major diameter of 10 mm and a pitch of 1.5 mm.

Minor diameter = major diameter - pitch = 10 - 1.5 = 8.5 mm

Effective diameter = major diameter + pitch = 10 + 1.5 = 11.5 mm

Effective diameter (using formula) = 10 - 0.6495 x 1.5 = 9.625 mm

Therefore, the effective diameter of the external metric thread is approximately 11.5 mm or 9.625 mm.
