A truck travelling at 80 kilometres per hour uses 40% more diesel to travel a certain distance than it does when it travels at the speed of 60 kilometres per hour. If the truck has a mileage of 19.6 km/ litre of diesel at 60 kilometres per hour, what distance (in kilometres) can the truck travel on 15 litres of diesel at a speed of 80 kilometres per hour?
Correct answer is '210'. Can you explain this answer?

Mileage of the truck is 19.6 km/litre when travelling at 60km/hr.
Since the truck shall consume 40% more diesel when travelling at 80km/hr, it effectively has a mileage of (19.6/1.4) = 14km/litre when travelling at a speed of 80km/hr.
Hence with 15 litres of diesel, the truck can travel for 1415 = 210 kms, when travelling at a speed of 80 km/hr.

    Solution:

Given that the truck has a mileage of 19.6 km/litre of diesel at 60 km/hr speed.

Let the distance travelled by the truck be ‘d’ km.

Let the diesel used by the truck be ‘x’ litres at a speed of 60 km/hr.

Then, the diesel used by the truck at 80 km/hr speed = 1.4x litres (since it uses 40% more diesel).

We know that, mileage = distance travelled / diesel used

    At 60 km/hr speed, mileage = 19.6 km/litre

    Therefore, x = d / 19.6

    At 80 km/hr speed, mileage = d / 1.4x

    = d / (1.4 × d / 19.6)

    = 19.6 / 1.4

    = 14 km/litre

Let the distance travelled by the truck on 15 litres of diesel at a speed of 80 km/hr be ‘D’ km.

    Then, D / 15 = 14

    D = 210 km

Hence, the truck can travel a distance of 210 km on 15 litres of diesel at a speed of 80 km/hr.
