A man has to travel a distance of 180 km in his car. The car develops some problem enroute due to which it covers the remaining distance at a speed of 4/5th of its initial speed. Hence it takes 1 hour more than expected to reach the destination. If the car travels for 2 hours without any glitch, what is the speed of the car (in km/hr) when it is travelling with a technical fault?
  • a)
    24
  • b)
    30
  • c)
    40
  • d)
    45
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

A man has to travel a distance of 180 km in his car. The car develops...
Let the car travel at a normal speed of V km/hr initially and let d km be the distance that the car travels without any problem.
Hence, the car travels the remaining (180 - d) km at (4V/5) km/hr Since the car travels 2 hours without any glitch, dIV = 2. So d = 2V ... (I)
The car takes 1 hour more because it travels (180 - d) km at (4V/5) km/hr instead of V km/hr.
Using (I) in the above equation, V = 30 km/hr Reduced speed = (4/5) x V = 24 km/hr .
Hence, the correct option is (a).

A man has to travel a distance of 180 km in his car. The car develops...
Let's assume the initial speed of the car as 'x' km/hr.

- Distance covered in the first 2 hours:
The car travels for 2 hours without any problem, so it covers a distance of 2x km.

- Distance covered after the technical fault:
The remaining distance to be covered is 180 - 2x km.
As per the given condition, the car covers this distance at a speed of 4/5th of its initial speed.
So, the speed of the car after the technical fault is (4/5) * x = (4x/5) km/hr.

- Time taken to cover the remaining distance:
The time taken to cover a distance is given by the formula: time = distance / speed.
So, the time taken to cover the remaining distance is (180 - 2x) / (4x/5) = (900 - 10x) / 4x.

- Comparison:
According to the given information, it takes 1 hour more than expected to reach the destination.
So, the actual time taken to cover the remaining distance is 1 hour more than the expected time, which is (900 - 10x) / 4x + 1.

- Equating the time:
The actual time taken (1 hour more than expected) is equal to the time taken without any problem (2 hours).
So, we have the equation: (900 - 10x) / 4x + 1 = 2.

- Solving the equation:
Let's simplify the equation to solve for 'x':
(900 - 10x) / 4x + 1 = 2
(900 - 10x) / 4x = 2 - 1
(900 - 10x) / 4x = 1
900 - 10x = 4x
900 = 14x
x = 900 / 14
x ≈ 64.29 km/hr.

Therefore, the speed of the car when it is traveling with a technical fault is approximately 64.29 km/hr.
Rounding it off, we get the answer as 64 km/hr.

However, none of the given options match with our answer. There might be a mistake in the question or the options provided.
