The problem consists of a question followed by 2 statements. Check whether the statements are sufficient to answer the question. Choose the option accordingly.
If Amar and Akbar work together on alternate days with Amar starting first and Akbar working at double his normal efficiency, the work gets completed on the 9th day. If Amar and Akbar work together, in how many days will the work be completed?
I. If Amar and Akbar work together with Akbar destroying the work, for 10 days (1/3) part of the work gets completed.
II. If Amar work at 20% more than his normal efficiency for 5 days after which Akbar comes and works at 75% of his efficiency for 4 days, 20% of the work still remains.
  • a)
    Statement I alone is sufficient, but Statement II alone is not sufficient to answer the question.
  • b)
    Statement II alone is sufficient, but Statement I alone is not sufficient to answer the question.

The problem consists of a question followed by 2 statements. Check wh...
Let Amar and Akbar can alone complete the work in 'x' and 'y' days respectively.
It is said that when they work alternately, the work gets completed on the 9th day but exactly how much part of the 9th day, Amar works for is not mentioned.
From Statement I:
(1/x - 1/y)*10 = 1/3
=> 1/x - 1/y = 1/30
Values of x and y cannot be found out.
From Statement II:
(1/x)(1 + 20/100)*5 + (75/100)*(1/y)*4 = (1 - 20/100)
=> 6/x + 3/y = 4/5
Values of x and y cannot be found out.
Using both statements together:
1/x = 1/y + 1/30
=> 6*(1/y + 1/30) + 3/y = 4/5
=> 6/y + 1/5 + 3/y = 4/5
=> 9/y = 3/5
=> y = 15
∴ 1/x = 1/15 + 1/30 = 1/10
=> x = 10
Part of work done by them together in1 day = 1/10 + 1/15 = ⅙
It will take them 6 days together to complete the work.
