Two 3-phase alternator operates in parallel. The rating of one machin...
Given:
Two 3-phase alternators operate in parallel.
Rating of machine 1 = 100 MW
Rating of machine 2 = 150 MW
Drooping characteristics of machine 1 = 5%
Drooping characteristics of machine 2 = 6%
Load to be shared = 180 MW

To find:
How will the alternators share the load of 180 MW?

Solution:
The drooping characteristics of a governor determine how much the output power of the alternator will change with a change in the input speed. It is expressed as a percentage change in output power for a percentage change in speed.

Step 1: Calculate the droop constant for each machine
Droop constant = 100 / (2 * pi * rating * droop)
Machine 1 droop constant = 100 / (2 * 3.14 * 100 * 0.05) = 31.847
Machine 2 droop constant = 100 / (2 * 3.14 * 150 * 0.06) = 17.146

Step 2: Calculate the speed of each machine
Speed = 100 / (1 + droop constant * (Pout - Prated))
Machine 1 speed = 100 / (1 + 31.847 * (180 - 100)) = 98.57%
Machine 2 speed = 100 / (1 + 17.146 * (180 - 150)) = 99.29%

Step 3: Calculate the power output of each machine
Pout = Prated * (1 + droop constant * (Pout - Prated))
Machine 1 power output = 100 * (1 + 31.847 * (180 - 100)) = 79.248 MW
Machine 2 power output = 150 * (1 + 17.146 * (180 - 150)) = 100.878 MW

Step 4: Calculate the power shared by each machine
Power shared by machine 1 = machine 1 power output - machine 1 rating = 79.248 - 100 = -20.752 MW
Power shared by machine 2 = machine 2 power output - machine 2 rating = 100.878 - 150 = -49.122 MW

Step 5: Adjust the power shared by each machine
Since both machines are operating in parallel, the power shared by each machine should be positive. To adjust the power sharing, we need to reduce the power output of machine 1 and increase the power output of machine 2.

Step 6: Final power sharing
Total power shared = machine 1 power output + machine 2 power output = 79.248 + 100.878 = 180.126 MW
Power shared by machine 1 = machine 1 power output - (total power shared - 180) = 79.248 - (180.126 - 180) = 79.248 - 0.126 = 79.122 MW
Power shared by machine 2 = machine 2 power output + (total power shared - 180) = 100.878 + (180.126 - 180) = 100.878
