A quarter circle beam of radius R curved in plan is fixed at end A and free at end B, as shown in figure. It carries a load P at free end. Determine the Deflection at the free end and draw shear force, bending moment, torsional moment diagrams ?
Most Upvoted Answer
A quarter circle beam of radius R curved in plan is fixed at end A and...
Deflection Calculation:

The deflection at the free end of the quarter circle beam can be calculated using the following formula:

δ = (P*R^2)/(3*E*I)

Where, P = Load at free end, R = Radius of the beam, E = Modulus of elasticity of the material, I = Moment of inertia of the beam.

Shear Force Diagram:

The shear force diagram for the quarter circle beam can be determined by calculating the vertical forces acting on the beam at different points. The shear force diagram will have the following characteristics:

  • At point A, the shear force will be zero.

  • As we move towards point B, the shear force will increase.

  • At point B, the shear force will be equal to the load P.

Bending Moment Diagram:

The bending moment diagram for the quarter circle beam can be determined by calculating the moments acting on the beam at different points. The bending moment diagram will have the following characteristics:

  • At point A, the bending moment will be zero.

  • As we move towards point B, the bending moment will increase.

  • The maximum bending moment will occur at point B and will be equal to (P*R)/2.

Torsional Moment Diagram:

Since the beam is curved in plan, there will be a torsional moment acting on the beam due to the curvature. The torsional moment diagram can be determined by calculating the torsional moments acting on the beam at different points. The torsional moment diagram will have the following characteristics:

  • At point A, the torsional moment will be zero.

  • As we move towards point B, the torsional moment will increase.

  • The maximum torsional moment will occur at point B and will be equal to (P*R).
