Calculation of Total Head at a Point in Water

Given Data:

  • Pressure at the point = 196.2 KN/m2

  • Velocity at the point = 0.5 m/s

  • Point is 5m above the datum

Formula to Calculate Total Head:

The total head at a point in water is given by the sum of three heads:

Total Head = Pressure Head + Kinetic Head + Elevation Head

Calculation:

  • Pressure Head = (Pressure at the point)/(Density of water x Acceleration due to gravity)

  • Using the above formula, Pressure Head = (196.2 KN/m2)/(1000 kg/m3 x 9.81 m/s2) = 0.02 m

  • Kinetic Head = (Velocity at the point)^2/(2 x Acceleration due to gravity)

  • Using the above formula, Kinetic Head = (0.5 m/s)^2/(2 x 9.81 m/s2) = 0.01 m

  • Elevation Head = Height of the point above the datum = 5m

  • Total Head = Pressure Head + Kinetic Head + Elevation Head

  • Substituting the above values, Total Head = 0.02 m + 0.01 m + 5m = 5.03 m

Result:

The total head at the given point in water is 5.03m.
