Directions: In the following problem, a question is followed by three statements numbered (I), (II), and (III). Read the statements carefully and determine which of the given statements is/are sufficient/necessary to answer the question.
Q. Rahul needs to visit his relative in another city. What is the distance required to be covered to reach there?
I. If he travels at a speed of 20 kmph, he will take 3 hours more than the time taken if he travels at a speed of 50 kmph.
II. If he covers half the distance at a speed of 20 kmph and the remaining half at a speed of 25 kmph, he will take 4.5 hours to reach there.
III. If he covers 60 km of the distance at a speed of 30 kmph and then reduces his speed by 10 kmph for the rest of the journey, he will reach there in 4 hours.
  • a)
    Only statements I and II
  • b)
    Only statements II and III
  • c)
    Only statement II and either statement I or statement III
  • d)
    All three statements
  • e)
    Any one of the statements
Correct answer is option 'E'. Can you explain this answer?

Directions: In the following problem, a question is followed by three...
Let the distance be X km.
Using statement I:
3X = 300
X = 100 km
Using statement II:
9X = 900
X = 100 km
Using statement III:
Time taken to cover 60 km = 60 ÷ 30 = 2 hours.
Speed for the rest of the journey = 30 – 10 = 20 kmph
Time for which the speed was 20 kmph = 4 – 2 = 2 hours
Distance travelled at 20 kmph = 20 × 2 = 40 km
Total distance = 60 + 40 = 100 km
Any one of the statements is sufficient to answer the question.

Understanding the Problem
To determine the distance Rahul needs to travel to reach his relative, we need to analyze the given statements.
Statement Analysis
Statement I: If Rahul travels at 20 kmph, he takes 3 hours longer than at 50 kmph.
- Let the distance be D km.
- Time taken at 20 kmph = D/20 hours
- Time taken at 50 kmph = D/50 hours
- The equation from the statement can be set up as:
D/20 = D/50 + 3
- This can be solved to find D.
Statement II: If he travels half the distance at 20 kmph and the other half at 25 kmph, he takes 4.5 hours.
- For half the distance (D/2):
Time at 20 kmph = (D/2) / 20 = D/40
Time at 25 kmph = (D/2) / 25 = D/50
- Total time = D/40 + D/50 = 4.5 hours
- This equation can also be solved to find D.
Statement III: If he covers 60 km at 30 kmph and the rest at 20 kmph, he reaches in 4 hours.
- Time for the first 60 km: 60/30 = 2 hours
- Remaining time = 4 - 2 = 2 hours
- Distance covered at 20 kmph in remaining time = 20 * 2 = 40 km
- Total distance D = 60 + 40 = 100 km.
Conclusion
Each statement can independently provide the distance D. Thus, any one of the statements is sufficient to answer the question.
Final Answer
The correct answer is option 'E': Any one of the statements.
