There given below are two number series they are series I and II. Find the value of ‘x’ and ‘y’ in given two series and then answer accordingly. (Note: Value of ‘x’ and ‘y’ is positive integers)
Series I: 532, 551, 594, 661, 752, (x2 – 33)
Series II: (x + 16), (5x + 40), (10x + 86), (15x + 192), (20x + 366), (2.5y + 766)
Q. Which of the following will be the correct relation between ‘x’ and ‘y’?
  • a)
    x < />
  • b)
    x > y
  • c)
    x = y or the relationship cannot be established
  • d)
    x ≥ y
  • e)
    x ≤ y
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

For series I,
532 + (12 × 2) – 5 = 551
551 + (12 × 4) – 5 = 594
594 + (12 × 6) – 5 = 661
661 + (12 × 8) – 5 = 752
Therefore, next number should be
752 + (12 × 10) – 5 = 867
Or, x2 – 33 = 867
Or, x2 = 900
Or, x = 30
Series II,
For x = 30, series should be
46, 190, 386, 642, 966
46 + 122 = 190
190 + 142 = 386
386 + 162 = 642
642 + 182 = 966
Therefore, next number should be
966 + 202 = 1366
Therefore, 2.5y + 766 = 1366
2.5y = 600
y = 240
According to question,
X =30 and y = 240
So, x < />
