The epidermis is a living tissue. It is the outermost layer of the skin and is responsible for protecting the body from external insults such as physical damage, UV radiation, and infection. The epidermis is made up of several layers of cells, each with a specific function. The outermost layer of the epidermis, called the stratum corneum, is composed of dead skin cells that have been pushed up and away from the living layers below. Despite being made up of mostly dead cells, the epidermis as a whole is considered a living tissue because it is actively produced and maintained by the cells in the lower layers of the epidermis. These cells undergo constant division and differentiation to produce new cells that replace the old ones as they are shed from the surface.
