A mixture contains alcohol and water in the ratio 4: 3. If 5 litres of...
Given:

Ratio of alcohol and water in mixture = 4:3
Ratio after adding 5 litres of water = 4:5

Let the initial quantity of alcohol and water be 4x and 3x respectively.
Then, the initial quantity of mixture = (4x+3x) = 7x

After adding 5 litres of water, the quantity of water becomes (3x+5) and the quantity of alcohol remains the same i.e. 4x.

According to the question, the ratio of alcohol and water after adding 5 litres of water is 4:5. Therefore,

4x/(3x+5) = 4/5

Solving the above equation, we get:

20x = 12x + 20

8x = 20

x = 2.5

Hence, the initial quantity of alcohol = 4x = 4*2.5 = 10 litres.

Therefore, the quantity of alcohol in the given mixture is 10 litres.

Hence, option (d) is the correct answer.
