Solution:

Let the total number of families in the colony be x.

Given,

2/5 of the families read The Hindu newspaper.

Therefore, the number of families that read The Hindu newspaper = (2/5)x.

3/4 of the families read Deccan Chronicle newspaper.

Therefore, the number of families that read Deccan Chronicle newspaper = (3/4)x.

40 families read none of the two newspapers.

100 families read both newspapers.

Therefore, the number of families that read only The Hindu newspaper = (2/5)x - 100.

And, the number of families that read only Deccan Chronicle newspaper = (3/4)x - 100.

Now, we can find the total number of families in the colony using the formula:

Total number of families = Number of families that read The Hindu newspaper + Number of families that read Deccan Chronicle newspaper + Number of families that read both newspapers + Number of families that read none of the two newspapers

i.e., x = (2/5)x + (3/4)x - 100 + 100 + 40

Simplifying the above equation, we get:

(1/10)x = 40

x = 400

Therefore, the number of families in the colony is 400.

Answer: d) 400.
