Given:
- Total number of students in the class = 40
- Two students were expelled from the class
- Average age of the class before and after the expulsion = 18 years
- Age of one of the expelled students = 14 years

To find: Age of the second expelled student

Approach:
Let's assume the age of the second expelled student to be x years.

Before the expulsion, the sum of ages of all the students in the class = 40 * 18 = 720 years

After the expulsion, the sum of ages of all the students in the class = 38 * 18 = 684 years (as two students are expelled)

As per the question, the average age of the class remained the same before and after the expulsion. So, we can write:

720 / 40 = 684 / 38

Solving the above equation, we get:

x = 22

Hence, the age of the second expelled student is 22 years.

Therefore, option A is the correct answer.
