Problem: When two students of a class with strength of 40 students were expelled, the average age of the class which was 18 years did not change. If one of the students was 20 years old, what was the age (in years) of the second student?

Solution:

Let the age of the second student be x.

Initial situation:

- Total students = 40
- Average age = 18
- Sum of ages = 40 x 18 = 720

After two students were expelled:

- Total students = 38
- Sum of ages = (20 + x) + (sum of ages of remaining 36 students)
- Average age = Sum of ages / Total students

Since the average age did not change,

18 = (720 - 20 - x) / 38

Solving the above equation, we get:

x = 22

Therefore, the age of the second student is 22 years.
