Directions: The following question are accompanied by two statements ...
(P + Q)’s 1 hr filling work = 1/12
From Statement I:
Let P takes x hrs to fill the tank.
Then, Q takes (x + 10) hrs to fill the tank.
(P’s 1 hr work) + (Q’s 1 hr work) = (P + Q)’s 1 hr work
⇒ 24x + 120 = x2 + 10x
⇒ x2 – 14x – 120 = 0
⇒ x2 – 20x + 6x – 120
⇒ x (x – 20) + 6 (x – 20)
⇒ (x + 6) (x – 20)
⇒ x = -6, 20
⇒ x = 20
Then, P alone takes 20 hrs to fill the tank.
From Statement II:
Let P takes 2x hrs and B take 3x hrs to fill the tank, then
⇒ 6x = 30
⇒ x = 5
So, P alone takes = 2x = 2 × 5 = 10 hrs to fill the tank.
Thus, either I or II is sufficient.
Hence, the correct option is (C).
