Ion concentrations obtained for a groundwater sample (having pH = 8.1) are given below:
Carbonate hardness (mg/L as CaCO3) present in the above water sample is (Answer up to the nearest integer)
    Correct answer is '205'. Can you explain this answer?
    Verified Answer
    Ion concentrations obtained for a groundwater sample (having pH = 8.1)...
    Carbonate hardness is equal to the total hardness or alkalinity whichever is less.
    Now, calculation of alkalinity which is caused by CO-3, HCO-3 and OH- and SO-4 and CI- does not cause any alkalinity but contributes to the total hardness.
    Alkalinity = lon concentration of HCO-3 x
    [Note = There is no any ion concentration of CO-3 and OH-]
    Alkalinity = 250 × 50/61 = 204.91 ≈ 205
    pH of water is 8.1. So, H+ ion also contributes little amount of alkalinity.
    So, total alkalinity = 205
    Carbonate hardness = 205 mg/L
