Five persons Ram, Shyam, Mohan, Sohan and Rohit are pulling a cart of mass 100 kg on a smooth surface and cart is moving with an acceleration 3 m s−2 in east direction. If Shyam stop pulling, the cart moves with acceleration 24 m s−2 in the north direction. When Ram stops pulling, it moves with the acceleration 1 m s−2 in the west direction. What is the magnitude of acceleration of the cart when only Ram and Shyam pull the cart keeping their direction same as the old directions?
  • a)
    26 m s−2
  • b)
    3√71 m s−2
  • c)
    25 m s−2
  • d)
    30 m s−2
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

Five persons Ram, Shyam, Mohan, Sohan and Rohit are pulling a cart of ...
-2.

Since the cart is moving with an acceleration of -2 m/s^2, it means there is a net force acting on the cart in the opposite direction of its motion.

Using Newton's second law of motion, F = ma, we can calculate the force required to produce this acceleration.

F = ma
F = 100 kg x (-2 m/s^2)
F = -200 N

So, there must be a net force of 200 N acting on the cart in the opposite direction of its motion.

If all five persons are pulling the cart together, we can assume that they are exerting an equal force on the cart.

Let's say each person exerts a force of Fp on the cart.

Then, the total force exerted on the cart by all five persons is:

Ftotal = 5Fp

Since the cart is moving with an acceleration of -2 m/s^2, we know that:

Ftotal = 100 kg x (-2 m/s^2)

Setting these two equations equal to each other, we get:

5Fp = -200 N

Solving for Fp, we get:

Fp = -40 N

So, each person is exerting a force of -40 N on the cart.

Since the force is in the opposite direction of the motion of the cart, we can say that the persons are pulling the cart backwards.
