On passing a current through KCl solution 19.5gm of potassium is depos...
Given:
- Mass of potassium deposited = 19.5 g
- Solution used: KCl
To find:
- Mass of aluminium deposited for the same quantity of electricity passed
- Solution used: aluminium chloride
Solution:

1. Calculate the amount of charge passed for the deposition of 19.5 g of potassium.

- The molar mass of potassium is 39.1 g/mol.
- The charge required to deposit 1 mole of potassium is 1 F (Faraday) = 96500 C.
- The number of moles of potassium deposited can be calculated as:

Moles of K = Mass of K / Molar mass of K
= 19.5 / 39.1
= 0.5 mol

- The amount of charge required to deposit 0.5 mol of K can be calculated as:

Charge (Q) = Moles of K x F
= 0.5 x 96500
= 48250 C

2. Calculate the mass of aluminium deposited for the same quantity of charge passed.

- The molar mass of aluminium is 27 g/mol.
- The charge required to deposit 1 mole of aluminium is 3 F (Faraday) = 3 x 96500 C.
- The number of moles of aluminium deposited can be calculated as:

Moles of Al = Charge / (3 x F)
= 48250 / (3 x 96500)
= 0.1667 mol

- The mass of aluminium deposited can be calculated as:

Mass of Al = Moles of Al x Molar mass of Al
= 0.1667 x 27
= 4.5 g

Therefore, the mass of aluminium deposited for the same quantity of electricity passed is 4.5 g, which is option A.
