IS code specification for permissible settlement:
(i) Total Permissible settlement:
  • For isolated footing on clay = 65 mm
  • For isolated footing on sand = 40 mm
  • For raft footing on clay = 65-100 mm
  • For raft footing on sand = 40-65 mm
(ii) Permissible Differential settlement:
  • For isolated footing on clay = 40 mm
  • For isolated footing on sand = 25 mm
(iii) Permissible angular settlement:
  • For high framed structure < 1/500
  • To prevent all type of minor damage < 1/1000
Note: For multi-storeyed buildings having isolated foundations on sand, the maximum permissible settlement is 60 mm [ For multistorey buildings having isolated foundations take the higher load as compare to single storey buildings having isolated foundations. So that deflection caused by multistorey building having isolated foundation higher than 40 mm (from the safer side)]

Maximum Permissible Differential Settlement for Isolated Foundation on Clay as per IS Code

According to the Indian Standard Code IS 8009:1980, the maximum permissible differential settlement for an isolated foundation on clay is 40 mm.

Explanation:

1. Differential Settlement:
Differential settlement refers to the variation in settlement between different parts of a structure or between adjacent structures. It occurs when one part of the foundation settles more than the other, resulting in uneven settlement across the structure. This can lead to structural distress, such as cracks in walls or floors.

2. Isolated Foundation:
An isolated foundation is a type of foundation used to support individual columns or walls. It is typically used when the load from the structure is concentrated in specific locations. Isolated foundations are designed to distribute the load from the structure to the underlying soil.

3. Clay Soil:
Clay soil is known for its low bearing capacity and high compressibility. It tends to undergo significant settlement when subjected to loads. The settlement of clay soil is primarily due to consolidation, which is the process of expelling the water from the soil voids under load.

4. IS 8009:1980:
IS 8009:1980 is the Indian Standard Code for determining the permissible limits of differential settlement in buildings and structures. It provides guidelines for designing foundations to control settlement and prevent damage to the structure.

5. Maximum Permissible Differential Settlement:
As per IS 8009:1980, the maximum permissible differential settlement for isolated foundations on clay is 40 mm. This means that the difference in settlement between any two points on the foundation should not exceed 40 mm. If the settlement exceeds this limit, it can result in structural damage and compromise the stability of the building.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, the maximum permissible differential settlement for isolated foundations on clay as per IS Code is 40 mm. This limit is important to ensure the structural integrity and stability of the building. By adhering to this standard, engineers can design foundations that minimize the risk of excessive settlement and associated damage.
