Calculation of Shear Force at Point C of a Cantilever Beam

  1. Draw the free body diagram of the cantilever beam.

  2. Calculate the reaction force at point A using the principle of moments.

  3. Calculate the reaction force at point A using the principle of equilibrium.

  4. Calculate the shear force at point C using the principle of equilibrium.

Step 1: Draw the Free Body Diagram of the Cantilever Beam

The free body diagram of the cantilever beam is shown below:

Step 2: Calculate the Reaction Force at Point A Using the Principle of Moments

Taking moments about point A, we have:

∑MA = 0

-1 x 1 = RA x 2

RA = -0.5 kN

Therefore, the reaction force at point A is 0.5 kN downwards.

Step 3: Calculate the Reaction Force at Point A Using the Principle of Equilibrium

Taking moments about point B, we have:

∑Fy = 0

RA + RB - 1 = 0

RB = 0.5 kN

Therefore, the reaction force at point B is 0.5 kN upwards.

Step 4: Calculate the Shear Force at Point C Using the Principle of Equilibrium

Taking moments about point C, we have:

∑Fy = 0

RA + RB - 1 - VC = 0

VC = RA + RB - 1

VC = -0.5 + 0.5 - 1

VC = -1 kN

Therefore, the shear force at point C is 1 kN downwards. However, since the question asks for the magnitude of the shear force and not the direction, the answer is 2 kN (absolute value) as the shear force changes direction from upwards to downwards at point C.
