- In 1946, British Prime Minister, Lord Attlee declared the visit of a three-member high-level delegation to India.
- In this delegation, the three members of the British cabinet were - Lord Pethick Lawrence (India Secretary), Sir Stafford Cripps (Chairman of the Board of Trade) and A.V. Alexander (1st Lord of the Admiralty or Minister of the Navy).
- This mission was given specific powers and its task was to find ways and possibilities for the peaceful transfer of power to India.
- The mission held talks with representatives of the Indian National Congress and the All India Muslim League.
- After initial negotiations, the mission proposed the formation of a new government on 16 May 1946.
- 389 seats were kept in the Constituent Assembly.
- Out of which 292 were representatives of British provinces, 4 commissioners and 93 princely states.
