Weight of iron nail increases when it gets rust.

EXPLANATION

This is due to the deposition of ferric oxide layers on the surface of iron.
Rusting is an electrochemical process in which iron reacts with oxygen in the presence of moisture to form hydrated layer of iron oxide, which eventually corrodes the metal iron .

FORMULA OF RUST

Rust is hydrated iron (III) oxide.
The chemical formula of rust is Fe2O3.xH2O.

CONFUSING POINT

Always remember that rust is hydrated ferric oxide not ferrous oxide.
In rusting, iron acts as an anode, impure surface area acts as cathode and moisture acts as an electrolyte.
Alkaline medium inhibits the rusting of iron.
Rusting of iron is faster in saline water than in ordinary water.
