What was Janet’s score on the fourth physics test she took?(1) H...
(1) Her score on the fourth test was 12 points higher than her average score on the first three tests she took.
Statement (1) provides information about the score on the fourth test in relation to the average score on the first three tests. However, it does not give any specific information about the average score or the individual scores on the first three tests. Therefore, statement (1) alone is not sufficient to answer the question.
(2) Her score on the fourth test raised her average test score from 87 to 90.
Statement (2) tells us that the score on the fourth test caused an increase in the average test score. However, it does not provide any information about the individual scores or the specific score on the fourth test. Therefore, statement (2) alone is not sufficient to answer the question.
Combining both statements, we still don't have enough information to determine Janet's score on the fourth physics test. While statement (1) provides a comparison to the average score on the first three tests, and statement (2) provides information about the overall average change, neither statement provides a direct value or calculation for the score on the fourth test. Therefore, both statements together are not sufficient.
Since statement (2) alone is sufficient to determine that Janet's average test score was raised from 87 to 90, but not sufficient to determine her score on the fourth test, the correct answer is option B: Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient to answer the question asked.
