Soda concentrate is being added into a soda-making machine in a manufacturing plant. The concentrate is added at a constant rate. At the same time prepared soda is being pumped out of the machine at a constant rate. What is the amount of soda being pumped out per minute?

(1) The soda machine has a capacity to hold 1000 gallons of water.
(2) 25 gallons of concentrate are added every minute and the total volume of liquid in the machine is reduced by 75 gallons every minute.
  • a)
Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient to answer the question asked
  • b)
Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient to answer the question asked
  • c)
BOTH statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are sufficient to answer the question asked, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient
  • d)
EACH statement ALONE is sufficient to answer the question asked
  • e)
Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient to answer the question asked, and additional data are needed
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?
Most Upvoted Answer
Soda concentrate is being added into a soda-making machine in a manufa...
To determine the amount of soda being pumped out per minute, let's analyze the given statements:
Statement (1) states that the soda machine has a capacity to hold 1000 gallons of water.
Statement (2) states that 25 gallons of concentrate are added every minute, and the total volume of liquid in the machine is reduced by 75 gallons every minute.
From statement (1) alone, we know the capacity of the soda machine, but we don't have any information about the rate at which the soda is being pumped out. Therefore, statement (1) alone is not sufficient to answer the question.
From statement (2) alone, we know that 25 gallons of concentrate are added every minute, and the total volume of liquid in the machine is reduced by 75 gallons every minute. However, we don't have information about the initial volume of liquid or how it relates to the rate at which soda is being pumped out. Therefore, statement (2) alone is not sufficient to answer the question.
By combining both statements, we can deduce that the soda machine has a capacity of 1000 gallons (from statement 1), and the total volume of liquid in the machine is reduced by 75 gallons every minute (from statement 2). However, we still don't have information about the rate at which soda concentrate is being pumped in or how it relates to the rate of pumping out prepared soda. Therefore, even when considering both statements together, we still cannot determine the amount of soda being pumped out per minute.
Since statement (2) alone is sufficient to answer the question while statement (1) alone is not, the answer is B: Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient to answer the question asked.
