The catchment area of the Kaveri river basin comprises the following groups of states:

Kaveri River water dispute-:
Introduction-:
  • It consists of 3 states and one union territory (Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Puducherry).
  • Before joining the sea, this river passes through Karaikal which is a part of Pondicherry.
  • The Karnataka government says that Karnataka, which was hit by a severe drought in 2016, faced water shortage for irrigation, after which it refused to give water to Tamil Nadu. After which the Tamil Nadu government moved the Supreme Court.
IMPORTANT FACTS-:
History of Kaveri Water Dispute-:
  • The kaveri water dispute started in the19th century.
  • The first legal dispute over kaveri water was in 1892 when Karnataka and Tamil Nadu were not states.
  • At that time there were princely states in India and British rule
  • At that time there was the Mysore royal states in India and the Madras Presidency on the other side.
  • In 1924, an agreement was made between these two royal families. But later Kerala and Pondicherry also got involved in this dispute.
  • A settlement was reached between all the four claimants to the Kaveri  water dispute in August 1976, following the report of a committee set up by the Government of India in 1972 and recommendations of experts.
  • This agreement was in favor of Tamil Nadu, so Karnataka did not follow the agreement and refused to give more water to Tamil Nadu.
  • Karnataka argues that agriculture in Karnataka is backward and most of the Kaveri river is in Karnataka itself.
  • While Tamil Nadu wants to keep the old system, Karnataka is not in favor of giving more water to Tamil Nadu.
Kaveri River-:
  • The Kaveri river originates from the Brahmagiri or Pushpagiri hills on the Western Ghats in Karnataka and flows into Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
  • It is also known as 'Ponni' in Tamil language.
  • It is the fourth largest river of South India.
  • The river Kaveri is called "Ganga of South India".
  • The valley of the Kaveri river is famous for the cultivation of paddy, due to which it is called the "Rice Bowl of South India".
