A list contains 7 positive integers. What is the value of the smallest integer in the set?

(1) The highest term in the set is 37
(2) When arranged in increasing order, the difference between any two consecutive terms is at least 6
  • a)
Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient to answer the question asked
  • b)
Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient to answer the question asked
  • c)
BOTH statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are sufficient to answer the question asked, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient
  • d)
EACH statement ALONE is sufficient to answer the question asked
  • e)
Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient to answer the question asked, and additional data are needed
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?

A list contains 7 positive integers. What is the value of the smallest...
Statement (1) says that the highest term in the set is 37. This information alone is not sufficient to answer the question. Knowing the highest term does not provide any information about the smallest integer or the other numbers in the list.
Statement (2) states that when arranged in increasing order, the difference between any two consecutive terms is at least 6. This information alone is sufficient to answer the question. If the difference between any two consecutive terms is at least 6, it means that there are at least 6 integers between the smallest and largest terms in the list. Therefore, the value of the smallest integer must be at least 37 - 6 = 31.
Since Statement (2) alone is sufficient to answer the question, while Statement (1) alone is not sufficient, the answer is B: Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient to answer the question asked.
