Tie-breaking criteria in IIT JAM Chemistry answer key

In the IIT JAM Chemistry examination, there are instances where multiple candidates secure the same marks. To resolve this tie, the following criteria are used:

1. Total number of correct answers:
The first criterion for breaking a tie is to consider the total number of correct answers given by the candidates. The candidate who has answered the maximum number of questions correctly will be ranked higher.

2. Negative marking:
If the number of correct answers is the same for two or more candidates, the next criterion is to consider the negative marking. The candidate who has attempted fewer incorrect answers will be given preference. This is because IIT JAM follows a negative marking scheme where marks are deducted for incorrect answers.

3. Sectional score:
If the tie still persists after considering the total number of correct answers and negative marking, the sectional score is taken into account. Each section of the Chemistry paper is given a separate score. The candidate with a higher score in a particular section will be ranked higher.

4. Subject-wise marks:
If the sectional scores are also the same for multiple candidates, then the next criterion is to consider the subject-wise marks. The marks obtained by the candidates in individual subjects of Chemistry are considered. The candidate with higher marks in a specific subject will be ranked higher.

5. Age of the candidate:
If the tie still persists after considering the above criteria, the age of the candidates is taken into account. The older candidate is given preference and ranked higher.

It is important to note that these tie-breaking criteria are used in a sequential manner. If the tie is broken at any step, the subsequent criteria are not applied. These criteria ensure fair evaluation and ranking of candidates in case of multiple correct answers in the IIT JAM Chemistry examination.
