Soil profile of Bihar -
  • Bihar is measurable on the world's fertile alluvial plain of the Ganga Valley which extends from the foothills of the Himalayas in the north to a few miles south of the Ganga River as it flows through the state from west to east. 
Soil of northern plains
  • The soil of this region is formed due to the sediments brought by the rivers Gandak, Budhi Gandak, Mahananda, Kosi and Saryu .
  • On the basis, the soil is further divided into three types:
  • Terai Soil : It is brown to yellow in color and neutral to moderately acidic in reaction. The soil of Terai is more fertile than that of Upper Terai. This type of soil  is found in the northern part of Bihar near the border of Nepal. 
  • Ganga alluvial soil:  In the plains of Bihar, this soil is generally fertile but has low organic content for regular plowing without manure. It is mostly loam with varying thickness. It is thinner towards the south and thicker towards the north.

  • This type of soil is found between the North Gangetic Plain and the Southern Plateau and is formed due to the alluvium deposited by the Son, Punpun and Phalgu  rivers.
  • Karail -Kewal soil: It is heavy soil (alkaline character) which is characteristic of wet paddy land or Dhandhar.  It is found from Rohtas to Gaya, Aurangabad, Jehanabad, Munger and Bhagalpur  . 
  • It is best suited for crops like rice and rabi, wheat, linseed, pulses and gram. 
  • Tal  Soil: It is found in the backwater belt of Ganga which extends from Buxar to Banka district.
  • The soil varies in color from light brown to dark brown and in texture from medium to heavy clay. 
  • Rabi or spring crops such as wheat, khesari, gram, peas, lentils are harvested after the water dries up and have a high yield.
  • Balthar soil:  It is less fertile and has less water absorption capacity.
  • Maize, jowar, bajra and gram are the main crops. It is found in a narrow strip from Kaimur plateau to Rajmahal hills.
Soil of Southern Plateau
  • Two types of soil are found in the southern plateau of Bihar:
  • Red and Yellow Soils:  These soils are formed by the disintegration of igneous and metamorphic rocks. They are less fertile and thus suitable for coarse crops and pulses. It is found in Banka, Gaya, Aurangabad, Jamui and Munger.
  • Red Sandy Soil:  This soil has high percentage of sand which makes it less fertile and suitable for crops of millet and jowar.
